"Voor de bouw van het Piusgesticht (klooster en school) ontving het kerkbestuur van de St. Martinusparochie onder voorzitterschap van pastoor P.J. Tasset in april 1875 de goedkeuring van de aartsbisschop. Om het gebouw tot stand te kunnen brengen werd het benodigde geld door bijdragen (van de families Thuis en Hebing en Johanna van Raaij) en collectes ingezameld. De benodigde grond, tegenover de kerk, werd gekocht van Joannnes Driever, eigenaar van huize De Bodenclauw, in die tijd waarschijnlijk Huize De Pol genoemd. De eerstesteenlegging voor het Piusgesticht vond plaats op 13 mei 1876 en het gesticht kwam in de loop van 1876 tot stand. De omliggende grond werd voorlopig bestemd voor het poten van aardappelen, want er was op dat moment nog geen overeenstemming met een kloosterorde om het onderwijs te gaan verzorgen.
Het eerste gebouw bestond uit een klooster met aan de noordzijde daarvan de school. Het klooster had drie bouwlagen, een hoog opgaand zadeldak en gemetselde topgevels. In het bouwplan (zie hieronder) was rekening gehouden met een trapgevel. Waarschijnlijk is dat niet gerealiseerd en is er vanaf het begin een tuitgevel gebouwd. De school had vier lokalen, twee op de begane grond en twee op de eerste verdieping. Op de begane grond was in het ene lokaal de naaischool gevestigd en in het andere de bewaarschool en de 1e en 2e klas. Op de eerste verdieping was het ene lokaal bestemd voor leerlingen van de 3e en 4e klas en het andere voor leerlingen van de 5e en 6e klas.
In 1889 werd het schoolgebouw aan de noordzijde uitgebreid en de nieuwe lokalen waren bestemd voor de bewaar- en naaischool. Deze uitbreiding kon worden gerealiseerd door beschikbare gelden vanuit de Onderwijswet van Mackay en een schenking door rustend pastoor Leonardus Berk.
In 1900 werd de leerplichtwet ingevoerd en in 1901 bleek de school al weer te klein. Nu werden aan de zuidzijde van het klooster drie leslokalen aangebouwd, maar ook dat bleek niet voldoende.
In 1911 werd het schoolgebouw aan de noordzijde ingrijpend verbouwd en uitgebreid.
In 1925 - 1926 werd het Piusgesticht wederom verbouwd en uitgebreid tot de vorm van vlak voor de fatale brand in 2000. Hierna werd het monumentale pand ingepast binnen het Kwadrant van het plan Meulenvelden.
Toen het gebouw werd opgeleverd, was er nog geen overeenstemming met een kloosterorde om het onderwijs aan de rooms katholieke meisjes in Didam te gaan verzorgen. Na maandelange onderhandelingen kwamen op 3 mei 1877 de eerste zes zusters, waaronder de moeder-overste, zuster Madeleine (Kliebisch), naar Didam. Dit waren zusters van de Sociëteit van Jezus, Maria en Jozef (kortweg zusters van JMJ), gevestigd in het klooster Marienburg in Den Bosch. Tien dagen na hun komst werd de school geopend. De eerste tijd werden de zusters opgevangen in Huize De Bodenclauw, een oude havezate, die al in 1410 in oude akten werd genoemd. Het huis, geheel omgeven door een gracht, stond achter het Piusgesticht en de kloostertuin.
In 1892 telde de school 268 leerlingen en in 1932 gaven al dertien leerkrachten les aan 460 leerlingen.
In 1966 werd de eerste leek als hoofd benoemd, te weten Jan Feenstra en vanaf 1968 werd de meisjesschool een gemengde school voor meisjes en jongens. In 1987 bestond de school uit acht klassen met in totaal 200 leerlingen. De laatste zuster, die werkzaam was in het basisonderwijs was Xavero van de Kolk. Vanwege fusies en stichting van scholen zoals De Wegwijzer (1968) en later De Springplank (1971) en - gelet op het feit dat de school niet meer aan de eisen van de tijd voldeed - werd de Pius X-school uiteindelijk gesloten. De nog aanwezige zusters verbleven nog tot 28 maart 1993 in het klooster, daarna sloot de Congregatie - na 116 jaar dienstbaar geweest te zijn in het onderwijs - in Didam haar poorten."
