Monsignor

While visiting Holy Cross Cemetery please remember that a cemetery is holy ground. A Catholic Cemetery is elevated just below the sacredness of the church itself.

St. Mary’s Cathedral Cemetery was opened in the 1880’s and had a name change in the 1940’s. Holy Cross Cemetery became the cemetery for the Fargo, West Fargo and Argusville parishes. At the time of the addition of two parishes an entrance gateway, a statue of the Risen Lord and a depository constructed.

The depository is a simply brick building that was designed with a pleasantly ornate doorway. The building is in good condition with few bricks showing any wear.

With technological advances that make winter burials possible, the depository is no longer used for holding remains. The depository is now used as a storage area. A small amount of gravel or pea-rock was piled on the side of the building when I visited. This makes the gravel readily available without it standing out as a pile in a large open space.

The Diocese of Fargo's Handbook for Catholic Cemetery Operations has a section on Receiving Vaults the states;

"Receiving Vaults
48. The Parish requires the use of a burial vault.
49. The receiving vault shall be for temporary use only and under no circumstances shall a body be considered interred or buried by reason of being placed therein.
50. The Parish shall reserve the right to inter any body in a single grave in the event of failure to make arrangements for the final disposition of the body within a reasonable time."
