"In 1998 valt het pand Hoekeinde 22 van de familie Rietveld in de prijzen (de 'tien met een griffel' van de Historische vereniging Werkendam). Het gerenoveerde pand heeft zijn behoud te danken aan de aanleg van de fietsdijk. Het pand werd gebouwd in 1851 door Johannes van ’t Sant, logementhouder en koopman te Sleeuwijk als stenen stalling. Aan de ronde bogen in de voor- en achtergevel is dit nog te herkennen, hier hingen in het verleden de staldeuren. De gekozen lokatie aan het Hoekeinde was zeer strategisch gezien het nabij gelegen veer naar Gorinchem; een route die eeuwenlang de doorgaande route van Parijs naar Amsterdam vormde. In 1891 wordt het pand verkocht aan timmerman Gerrit van Wijk, die het voorste gedeelte van de schuur verbouwt tot woning. In het achterste gedeelte heeft Van Wijk zijn timmermanswerkplaats. Later wordt in een gedeelte van het voorhuis een manufacturenwinkeltje gevestigd; tijdens de laatste renovatie werden daar nog spulletjes van teruggevonden. In 1991 werd het pand door het Hoogheemraadschap Alm en Biesbosch aangekocht om te slopen. Door de dijkverzwaring zou geen plaats meer zijn voor het pand. Na het besluit tot aanleg van de fietsdijk wordt het pand in 1996 bij opbod verkocht aan de familie Rietveld. Zij hebben bij de renovatie getracht zoveel mogelijk historische details te behouden, zoals bijvoorbeeld de originele waterput in de huidige woonkamer. De prijs werd uitgereikt tijdens de jaarvergadering van de Historische vereniging Werkendam op 31 maart door toenmalig wethouder J. van Belzen."

"In 1998, the Hoekeinde 22 building of the Rietveld family received an award (the 'ten with a pencil' of the Werkendam Historical Association). The renovated building owes its preservation to the construction of the bicycle dike. The building was built in 1851 by Johannes van 't Sant, innkeeper and merchant in Sleeuwijk as a stone stable. This can still be recognized by the round arches in the front and rear, where the stable doors hung in the past. The chosen location at the Hoekeinde was very strategic in view of the nearby ferry to Gorinchem, a route that for centuries was the main route from Paris to Amsterdam.In 1891 the property was sold to carpenter Gerrit van Wijk, who converted the front part of the barn into a house. The neighborhood was his carpenter's workshop, later a small drapery shop was established in part of the front house, items of which were recovered during the last renovation. the property was purchased by the Alm en Biesbosch Water Board for demolition. Due to the reinforcement of the dike, there would no longer be room for the building. After the decision to construct the bicycle dyke, the property was auctioned in 1996 to the Rietveld family. During the renovation, they tried to preserve as many historical details as possible, such as the original well in the current living room. The prize was presented during the annual meeting of the Werkendam Historical Association on March 31 by then alderman J. van Belzen."
