The 1971 Calder piece, “Eagle” was refurbished and moved downtown to the Olympic Sculpture Park from it’s former location in front of the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. Here the piece is perched atop a hill and seems to be spreading it's wings ready to fly off over the Puget Sound in search of salmon.
Calder was born in Pennsylvania in 1898, and long before his death in 1976 had become one of this country's most popular sculptors. His work ranges from grand outdoor works like "Eagle" or "Flamingo" in Chicago, to the suspended kinetic sculptures that artist Marcel Duchamp dubbed "mobiles."
The sculpture was a gift from Jon and Mary Shirley. Jon said "I felt if there was anything that would symbolize what we were trying to do at the [Olympic Sculpture] park, it was this sculpture. It's just a soaring, beautiful piece." Its price was reported by art news sources as between 10 and 15 million dollars.
