The Kiruna mine is the largest and most modern underground iron ore mine in the world and owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB).
Mining began in 1898 and since then the mine has produced over 950 million tons of ore. The ore body in the Kiruna mine is 4 km (2.5 mi) long, 80 meters (120 feet) to 120 meters (390 feet) thick and has a depth of up to 2 km (1.2 mi).
Due to the extensive mining, it was decided in 2004 to start moving buildings in Kiruna, due to the danger of collapse. This will happen gradually over several years.

LKAB’S Visitor Center has guided tours to the mine.
