A pieta (Italian pronunciation: [pje'ta]; meaning "pity", "compassion") is a subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, most often found in sculpture. As such, it is a particular form of the Lamentation of Christ, a scene from the Passion of Christ found in cycles of the Life of Christ. When Christ and the Virgin are surrounded by other figures from the New Testament, the subject is strictly called a lamentation in English, although pieta is often used for this as well, and is the normal term in Italian.
Although the pieta most often shows the Virgin Mary holding Jesus, there are other compositions, including those where God the Father participates in holding Jesus. In Spain the Virgin often holds up one or both hands, sometimes with Christ's body slumped to the floor.

Pieta je zobrazení Panny Marie na klíne s telem Krista po jeho snetí z kríže (horizontální nebo vertikální) vyvinuté ze scény Oplakávání izolováním obou postav.
Pieta bývá nejcasteji zobrazována ve forme sousoší. Sousoší Piety je charakteristickým motivem stredoevropského gotického socharství.
Zobrazení Piety je soucástí ikonografického cyklu výjevu ze života Krista a zároven cyklu výjevu ze života Panny Marie. V rámci Kristova ikonografického cyklu je soucástí Pašijového cyklu, tedy cásti venované jeho Ukrižování. V nem se nachází mezi výjevy Snímání z kríže a Kladení do hrobu, a to puvodne v podobe tzv. Oplakávání (lamentace). V západní tradici se stalo standardním zobrazování tohoto výjevu bezprostredne po Snímání z kríže. Zduraznením motivu Panny Marie a postupným vyloucením ostatních postav se z motivu Oplakávání vyvinul motiv Piety. Pieta (nebo Oplakávání) predstavuje 13. zastavení krížové cesty a také jednu ze sedmi bolestí Panny Marie.
