Die mittelalterliche Rundburg wurde 1049 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. In den Jahren 1566-1573 kam es zum Umbau zum Renaissance-Wohnschloss unter Einbeziehung der Grundmauern, der Kellergewölbe und verschiedenen Bauteilen der Untergeschosse der romanisch-gotischen Rundburg. Das Schloss wurde mit 70 bewohnbaren Zimmern, einem prächtigen Fürstensaal mit wertvollen Sandsteinkamin von 1567 und einem streng geheimen Gemach ausgestattet. Die Dächer sind mit 21 kunstvoll verzierten Zwerchhäusern (Giebel) verziert und der Turm auf 37 Meter erhöht wurden.

Ab ca. 1740 begann der traurige Abstieg dieses schönen Renaissanceschlosses in eine ungewisse Zukunft. In den Gebäudeteilen waren unter anderem eine japanische Lackmalerei, eine Tabakwarenfabrik sowie eine Straf- und Besserungsanstalt untergebracht.

Seit 1980 wird das Schloss schrittweise restauriert.

The medieval round castle was first mentioned in a document in 1049. In the years 1566-1573, it was converted into a Renaissance residential palace, including the foundation walls, the cellar vaults and various components of the basement of the Romanesque-Gothic round castle. The castle was equipped with 70 habitable rooms, a splendid prince's hall with a valuable sandstone fireplace from 1567 and a top-secret chamber. The roofs are decorated with 21 artistically decorated gable houses (gables) and the tower has been increased to 37 meters.

From around 1740 the sad decline of this beautiful renaissance castle into an uncertain future began. The parts of the building housed, among other things, a Japanese lacquer painting, a tobacco factory and a penal and reformatory institution.

The castle has been gradually restored since 1980.
