JI Gardner's Mercantile building is currently home to Murphy's Restaurant. The store was built by James Isom Gardner who completed construction of the building in 1891. The store front was delivered from the train depot at the end of this street, and took several teams of horses to move. James was a sterling citizen, and a prominent businessman, who arrived in Prescott in April 1878 on burros. On June 30th 1890, he married Rebecca E. Bell. They had a daughter James Maryfrank Gardner and a son Gail Irwin "Buster JIG" Gardner, a renowned cowboy poet and Postmaster of Prescott. JI "JIG" Gardner operated his business out of this building for 27 years till he closed its doors on April 1st 1918.
