[FIN] Hirsipuumäen teloituspaikan muistomerkin on suunnitellut Esko Hillilä vuonna 1991. Kyseessä on Turun kaupungin hanke, jonka takana ovat olleet museon arkeologi Heljä Brusila ja silloinen kaupunginarkkitehti Jorma Aho. Muistomerkki sijaitsee Turussa Kerttulinmäellä Kerttulin lukion vieressä, yhdellä Turun seitsemästä kukkulasta. Aiemmin kukkula tunnettiin Hirttomäkenä tai Hirsipuumäkenä. Muistomerkissä olevassa laatassa on teksti, jossa paikan kerrotaan olleen kaupungin teloituspaikka keskiajalta 1700-luvun loppuun.

Muistomerkki koostuu neljästä betonipylväästä, joiden päällä on pylväitä yhdistävä metallirinkula ja sen alla keskellä maassa suuri kivi. Teloituksia tehtiin tuohon aikaan yleisimmin joko mestaamalla tai hirttämällä. Ison kiven voi ajatella kuvastavan mestaamispaikkaa ja ylhäällä olevan metallirinkulan hirttämistä.

Hirtetyt jätettiin varoitukseksi roikkumaan hirsipuuhun, jolloin kaupunkiin Hämeen härkätietä pitkin matkaavat näkivät, että kannattaa käyttäytyä kunnolla. Teloitetuilla ei ollut kirkkomaahan asiaa, ruumiit heitettiin joskus teloituspaikan läheisyydessä olevaan Mätäjärveen.



[EN] The monument to the execution site of Hirsipuumäki was designed by Esko Hillilä in 1991. It is a project of the City of Turku, behind which the museum's archaeologist Heljä Brusila and the then city architect Jorma Aho were. The monument is located in Kerttulinmäki, Turku, next to Kerttuli High School, on one of Turku's seven hills. Previously, the hill was known as Hirttomäki or Hirsipuumäki. The plaque on the monument has a text stating that the place was the site of the execution of the city from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century.

The monument consists of four concrete pillars with a metal truss connecting the pillars on top and a large stone in the middle below it. Executions at that time were most commonly carried out by either beheading or hanging.

As a warning, the hangers were hung on a log tree, so those who traveled to the city along the Hämeenhärkätie Road saw that it was worth behaving properly. The executed had nothing to do with the church land, the bodies were sometimes thrown into Lake Mätäjärvi (Rottenlake) near the place of execution.
