The badge is made up of 3 ostrich feathers protruding through a gold coronet. The words at the bottom Ich Dien can be translated as I serve.

Legend has it that the badge was first used by Edward, the Black Prince, the eldest son of Edward III of England in 1346. He apparently took a helmet lined with ostrich feathers from the body of one of his enemies in the battle of Crecy.
