This free holiday lights display is at the Mitch Park, beginning at the entrance to the ballparks (south side of the park). This is a dog-friendly park, but they must be on a leash.

The city's website details the development of this holiday lights display, which was a replacement for the Parade of Lights. Luminance has consistently been such a wonderful event for families during the holidays.

2021 Luminance will offer food trucks (select Fridays and Saturdays from 5-8). (visit link)

Luminance is a walk-thru holiday light display that will be open to the public in Mitch Park in Edmond, Oklahoma. Residents and visitors will get to experience a one-of-a-kind holiday lighting event that will for sure get you in the holiday spirit. With Edmond being the premier city to have 3D lighted displays, you are sure to see something you’ve never seen.

How Luminance Was Born

2017.

Mayor and City Council were presented with the idea of replacing the Edmond Electric Parade of Lights. The parade was often cancelled due to weather and attendance had been declining. “We discovered 3D light displays that were popular in cities abroad. Featuring them in a month-long, walk-through lighted stroll in Mitch Park felt like a creative combination” said Jessica Lyle, Community Program Manager, Edmond Electric. The outcome of the 2017 City Council workshop was:

? Forgo the Parade of Lights.
? Move the Mayor’s Tree Lighting & Essay Contest to Mitch Park.
? Retain lighting in Downtown Edmond and Shannon Miller Park.
? Support Edmond as the only city in Oklahoma to have a walk-through 3D lighted display.
? Add additional 3D lighted displays in Mitch Park every year.

Edmond Electric’s Luminance: An Enchanted Stroll inaugural year showcased two 3D displays. The Mayor’s Tree Lighting & Essay Contest kicked off the season with an estimated 500 in attendance, which was more than anticipated. The two displays stayed lit throughout the new year with excitement from the community growing.

2018.

In its’ Grand Opening year, Edmond Electric’s Luminance unveiled 20 new displays. In continuing tradition, the Mayor’s Tree Lighting & Essay Contest kicked off the season with approximately 1,000 in attendance. Luminance ran through January 6, 2019 and hosted three special events through the month of December. The Edmond Ice Rink noticed increased attendance with over 10,000 skaters which was 2,000 more than the 2017 season.

2019.

Thirteen new displays made their debut as we unveiled the first Pop-Up Shop experience called Merry Marketplace. Fifty vendors from across the state set up various booths; guests enjoyed shops, crafts and food trucks. The Kickoff featured the Mayor’s Essay Contest winners and the lighting ceremony. The City of Edmond installed a trail counter that calculated 2,400 people attending the Kickoff. Overall, the 2019 season saw approximately 35,000 visitors and had over 50,000 engagements on social media. It was recognized as one of the Top 5 Places to See during the holiday season from News Channel 5. The Edmond Ice Rink enjoyed an increase of 37% in skaters, making 2019 their best year yet. An Economic Impact Study was completed by the EEDA that calculated the economic impact of Luminance at $3,225,168; and that Luminance likely generated $102,719 in local sales tax dollars.

2020.

In spite of the ongoing pandemic, Edmond Electric’s Luminance kicked off its’ third season on November 21, 2020 and ran through January 3, 2021. This event once again grew in displays and attendance. Staff opted to not host any special events in 2020 due to Covid-19, but fortunately, the attendance wasn’t affected.

The estimated attendance for the season was 72,000 visitors, and there were over 65,000 engagements through our social media (Facebook) promotions. The number of displays expanded to 35 with the goal of debuting new displays each year. Jessica Lyle, Community Program Manager for Edmond Electric, is our point person for this great event and an Advisory Committee made up of Edmond business leaders meets throughout the year to help with planning and coordination. Businesses around town are now seeing the benefit of investing in this new holiday tradition and with that, a sponsorship guide was created; staff hopes to partner with several businesses for the 2021 season. The Edmond Economic Development Authority did an Economic Impact Report for this event and it is projected the event likely generated over $200,000 in local sales tax dollars with a total economic impact of $6,697,677. The Advisory Committee will focus heavily on special events for the 2021 season and ways to generate more revenue to purchase more displays.
