This anchor was installed in tribute of the city of Villefranche-sur-Saône to the French Navy and for the Celebration of the 10th anniversary of the naval military preparation of Villefranche.
Inaugurated on March 11, 2017, this anchor comes from the Battleship Provence (1913-1942).
On September 22, 2017, one of the two crews of the nuclear attack submarine (SNA) Emerald was in Villefranche on the occasion of the award of the certificates to the new promotion of the Marine Military Preparation.
The Emerald is one of the Navy's six Rubis-class nuclear attack submarines.
Since then, the links between the members of this nuclear-powered vessel and Villefranche have multiplied. The Beaujolais city has become the godmother of the Emerald, a sign of the municipality's attachment to the Army-Nation bond. The donation of an anchor of the cuirassier Provence which now sits in the south gardens of the City Hall came to thank this support to a unit of the French Navy, one of the six SNAs based in Toulon.
