Gullfoss is a waterfall in the river Hvítá. It is a large waterfall where about 100 cubic meters of water run through the waterfall every second. The waterfall is visited annually by many tourists, as it is part of "The Golden Circle" a tourist route to several of Iceland's sights.
Foreign investors have previously had plans to use Gullfoss to produce electricity. However, investors' attempts were in vain, partly due to lack of money. The waterfall was later sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.
Sigríður Tómasdóttir, an Icelandic environmentalist, struggled to preserve the waterfall. A memorial for Sigriður is located by the waterfall.

When visiting Iceland, even if it is only a single day, it is recommended to visit the Gullfoss waterfall. Either with a tourist trip or even rent a car. It is only a 1 1/2 hour drive from Reykjavik to Gullfoss. I have worked in Reykjavik, and have been to Gullfoss several times. It is a very impressive waterfall, which actually consists of several large waterfalls. A rainbow can often be seen at the waterfall. There are trails around the area and several lookout points. However, it is somewhat touristy, with a cafe and visitor center and many people.
In Iceland you are only allowed to walk on the trails. The plants are very vulnerable as they only have a short growing season, and there are small signs around the area that point out that you have to take care of nature.
