The Ravensburger Puzzle 14082 is part of a "Beautiful Skylines" series. The official name is "Rome", but the main motif of the photo is the St. Peter's Square in Vatican City State. The photo was taken from the dome of the St. Peter's Basilica. It has 1,000 pieces and measures 70 x 50 x 0.3 cm.
When we visited Vatican City State in 2002, we took a photo from the same spot, obviously the perfect spot to give a wonderful overview of this remarkable square. It's difficult to take all the steps to the very top of the Basilica, but the view is well worth it.
St. Peter's Square
"Saint Peter's Square (Italian: Piazza San Pietro, Latin: Forum Sancti Petri) is a large plaza located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, the papal enclave inside Rome, directly west of the neighborhood (rione) of Borgo. Both the square and the basilica are named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus considered by Catholics to be the first Pope.
At the centre of the square is an ancient Egyptian obelisk, erected at the current site in 1586. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square almost 100 years later, including the massive Doric colonnades, four columns deep, which embrace visitors in 'the maternal arms of Mother Church'. A granite fountain constructed by Bernini in 1675 matches another fountain designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613."
