Roughly a 3-4 mile round trip hike depending on your route will take you to one of the best example and accessible mine along The Fiery Gizzard Trail. With the discovery of coal in 1845 in nearby Tracy City, it had turned into a coal mine town overnight. Though the coal was not as plentiful as other regions, these mines were referred to as "Dog Hole" mines due to the fact they were so small only a dog could stand up in them. At this location coal is still present.

For a more thorough history of Coal Mining in the Tracy City region see the book linked as associated website.
