"El Puente del Beso (actualmente tiene en uno de sus extremos un azulejo pintado con su nombre) se ubica uniendo el Barrio de la Pescadería con el otro costado del Río Negro. Es uno de los siete puentes que cruzan este serpenteante caudal y también el más famoso por la leyenda que se le atribuye.
A primera vista no tiene nada de especial, pero al bucear en sus “archivos” más profundos, una historia de amantes sale a relucir. Cuentan que durante la Edad Media los mares estaban llenos de piratas dispuestos a saquear y a arrasar los navíos en los que viajaban los españoles. Es en este entorno de leyenda y mito donde aparece un personaje crucial, por ser el protagonista de esta historia y por haber dado nombre a uno de los barrios (junto con la Pescadería) más importantes de Luarca: Cambaral. Era un temido y poderoso corsario, ya que no se conformaba con arrollar todo a su paso, sino que además torturaba hasta la muerte a los pasajeros de los barcos alcanzados.
Las mujeres no corrían mejor suerte, ya que Cambaral las hacía prisioneras con el último fin de comerciar con ellas en los mercados que visitaba.
Muchos fueron los que intentaron frenarle y capturarle, pero todo fue en vano. Hubo que esperar a que un joven llamado Hidalgo consiguiera vencerle en una batalla, hiriendo de gravedad al pirata. Hidalgo poseía un gran corazón y no dejó que Cambaral falleciese, llevándoselo consigo a su casa para intentar curarle. Es precisamente durante esta estancia de convalecencia, cuando el temido corsario conoce a la preciosa hija de Hidalgo de la cual se enamora sin remedio alguno. La bella joven también se enamoró de Cambaral y ambos decidieron que para vivir su historia sin traba alguna, debían huir juntos.
Como toda historia de leyenda que se precie, el final es épico y nada favorable para los dos amantes. Éstos esperaron a que el padre de la muchacha se durmiese para poder irse sin problema alguno. Nada más verse, se fundieron en el beso más intenso y apasionado de la historia. Entre el deseo y la excitación de dos amantes que se acaban de encontrar, hizo aparición Hidalgo, el cual se había despertado y había visto que no estaban. Preso de la ira y del odio por verse traicionado, mató a su hija y a Cambaral con una espada, cortándoles la cabeza.
Los cuerpos de los amantes permanecieron unidos en su abrazo final mientras que sus cabezas rodaron hasta el mar.

Aunque más doloroso era alzar la vista y encontrarse con aquellos dos cuerpos abrazados: el de Cambaral, auténtico terror de los mares, y el de su única hija».

Como recuerdo de tal historia de amor se decidió construir un puente en el lugar del fatal desenlace.
Son muchos los que aún hoy dicen que cuando cae la noche y la luna llena brilla con todo su esplendor, se siguen escuchando susurros de amor.
NOTA: Convendría aclarar que no existe ninguna referencia histórica sobre ningún pirata llamado Cambaral, que tal y como hemos puesto más arriba, habría dado nombre al barrio marinero más conocido de Luarca. El topónimo de El Cambaral hace referencia a un “lugar abundante en cangrejos”, y de ahí vendría su nombre."

At first glance there is nothing special, but diving into its deepest "archives", a story of lovers comes out. They say that during the Middle Ages the seas were full of pirates ready to loot and destroy the ships in which the Spanish traveled. It is in this setting of legend and myth where a crucial character appears, for being the protagonist of this story and for having given its name to one of the most important neighborhoods (along with the Fishmonger) in Luarca: Cambaral. He was a feared and powerful privateer, since he did not content himself with running over everything in his path, but also tortured the passengers of the ships hit to death.
Women had no better luck, since Cambaral made them prisoners with the last purpose of trading with them in the markets he visited.
Many were those who tried to stop him and capture him, but all to no avail. We had to wait for a young man named Hidalgo to defeat him in battle, seriously wounding the pirate. Hidalgo had a great heart and did not let Cambaral pass away, taking him home with him to try to heal him. It is precisely during this convalescent stay, when the feared corsair meets the beautiful daughter of Hidalgo with whom he falls hopelessly in love. The beautiful young woman also fell in love with Cambaral and both decided that in order to live their story without any hindrance, they should flee together.
Like any legendary story worth its salt, the ending is epic and nothing favorable for the two lovers. They waited for the girl's father to fall asleep so they could leave without any problem. As soon as they saw each other, they merged into the most intense and passionate kiss in history. Between the desire and the excitement of two lovers who have just met, Hidalgo appeared, who had woken up and had seen that they were not there. Prisoner of anger and hatred at being betrayed, he killed his daughter and Cambaral with a sword, cutting off their heads.
The bodies of the lovers remained united in their final embrace as their heads rolled to the sea.

As a reminder of such a love story, it was decided to build a bridge at the site of the fatal outcome.
There are many who even today say that when night falls and the full moon shines with all its splendor, whispers of love continue to be heard.
NOTE: It should be clarified that there is no historical reference to a pirate named Cambaral, who, as we have stated above, would have given its name to the best-known fishing district of Luarca. The place-name of El Cambaral refers to a “place abundant in crabs”, and that's where its name comes from."
