Kew Railway Bridge is a Grade II-listed railway bridge on the west side of London that links Gunnersbury Station to the north and Kew Gardens Station to the south. Opened in 1869, it is built of a mixture of cast iron and wrought iron. The bridge is essentially unaltered in the years since, apart from the electrification of the rails. There is no pedestrian or vehicle access to this bridge, which is exclusively for railway use and carries both District Line services and the London Overground.

The book ‘Civil Engineering Heritage - London and the Thames Valley’, by Denis Smith (2001) carries a description of the bridge, which I have reproduced here:

“In 1864 the London & South Western Railway Company obtained an Act to extend their line from South Acton Junction to Richmond. Four pairs of cast-iron cylinders form piers supporting the three 115 foot long river spans of wrought-iron lattice girder trusses. There is a similar approach span at each end. Decorative cast iron caps to the piers form the junctions between the girders giving a pleasing functional appearance to the structure. The bridge was designed by W. R. Galbraith and the contractors were Brassey & Ogilvie. The bridge was opened on 1 January 1869”.

The coordinates for this Waymark are for a safe viewing location at the Strand-on-The Green (northern) end of the bridge.
