A statue of King Haakon VII has been erected in a number of places in Norway. Also in Bodø you can see a statue of the King. The sculpture was made by the artist Ørnulf Bast in 1959. The statue stands on a large granite stone with the text; "Haakon in 1940". Furthermore, his monogram surrounded by leaves.

Haakon 7. (3 August 1872 - 21 September 1957) was born in Denmark and was the second eldest son of the Danish king Frederik 8. In Denmark he was called Prince Carl, but he changed this to the Norwegian royal name Haakon when he became king in Norway.

He was trained as an officer in the Navy and served as a lieutenant in the Royal Danish Navy.
On 22 July 1896 he was married at Buckingham Palace in London to his cousin Princess Maud of Great Britain. She was the youngest daughter of the later King Edward VII of Great Britain. After their wedding, the couple lived in Copenhagen and had a son, the later King Olav 5.
After the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905, Prince Carl was proposed by the Norwegian government as a candidate for the Norwegian throne. Prince Carl wanted a referendum on this, and he was unanimously elected by the Storting as King of Norway on 18 November 1905. After the election, he took a Norwegian royal name, Haakon, and on 22 June 1906, Haakon and Maud were crowned in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. King Haakon became a widower when Queen Maud died on November 20, 1938.
During World War II from June 7, 1940 to 1945, King Haakon was in exile in London. King Haakon VII died at the Royal Palace in Oslo on 21 September 1957 after having been King of Norway for more than 50 years.
