The Grand Duchess George Of Russia was visiting Harrogate when World War I broke out. During the war she stayed in Harrogate, founded a number of hospitals for the wounded and after the war erected this Memorial Cross dedicated to the patients who died of their wounds. It stands outside the wall of what is now Harrogate District Hospital on Wetherby Road.
The inscription at the bottom of the cross is very faded but includes the following text from John 11:25.
'I am the Resurrection and the Life. He that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live.'
