Tijdens de bezetting van Nederlands-Indië in 1942-1945 interneerden de Japanners ruim honderdduizend Nederlanders en Indo-Europeanen in kampen. Deze maatregel paste in hun streven om de Europese invloed uit te bannen ten gunste van hun eigen cultuur. Vrouwen en jonge kinderen sloten zij op in vrouwenkampen. Velen overleefden dit niet. Dit monument gedenkt de slachtoffers in deze kampen. Het beeld van de kunstenaar Frank Nix (1934-2008) geft uitdrukking aan de innerlijke kracht van de geïnterneerde vrouwen en hun zorg voor de kinderen. De open muur symboliseert de gevlochten omheining van het kamp. De natuurstenen blokken en de marmeren sokkel zijn schenkingen van Duitsland respectievelijk Italië.

Koningin Juliana onthulde het monument in 1971 in het Apeldoornse Prinsenpark. Nadat vandalen het kunstwerk herhaaldelijk hadden beschadigd, werd het oorspronkelijk in keramiek uitgevoerde plastiek gegoten in brons. Het monument kreeg vervolgens een veiliger plaats op Bronbeek, waar prinses Juliana het op 31 augustus 1985 onthulde. Jaarlijks wordt bij dit monument een herdenking gehouden. Deze is altijd rond 25 augustus, omdat op 25 augustus 1945 het laatste kamp vernam dat de Japanse keizer het capitulatieverdrag had ondertekend. Bij de herdenking staat naast het monument een namenwand opgesteld met de namen van ruim 3.800 vrouwen en kinderen die in de kampen zijn overleden en van hen die kort na de bevrijding door de ontberingen in die kampen zijn gestorven.

During the occupation of the Dutch East Indies in 1942-1945, the Japanese interned more than a hundred thousand Dutch and Indo-Europeans in camps. This measure was in line with their aim to eliminate European influence in favor of their own culture. They locked up women and young children in women's camps. Many did not survive this. This memorial commemorates the victims in these camps. The image of the artist Frank Nix (1934-2008) expresses the inner strength of the internee women and their care for the children. The open wall symbolizes the woven fencing of the camp. The natural stone blocks and the marble plinth are gifts from Germany and Italy respectively.

Queen Juliana unveiled the monument in 1971 in the Prinsenpark in Apeldoorn. After vandals repeatedly damaged the artwork, it was originally ceramics, plastic cast in bronze. The monument was then given a safer place at Bronbeek, where Princess Juliana unveiled it on August 31, 1985. A commemoration is held at this monument every year. This is always around August 25, because on August 25, 1945, the last camp learned that the Japanese emperor had signed the capitulation treaty. At the commemoration, a wall of names has been set up next to the monument with the names of more than 3,800 women and children who died in the camps and of those who died shortly after the liberation due to the hardship in those camps.
