The polar bears are standing in/near a fountain on Callunaplein in the center of Dieren. The artwork was designed in 1987 by artist Maïté Duval and has been the face of the Dieren shopping center for years.
In the summer, water flows around the polar bears, but in the winter the water is closed.

De beeldengroep “IJsberen” is in 1987 op het Callunaplein in Dieren geplaatst ter gelegenheid van de oplevering van de tweede fase van winkelcentrum Calluna (tegenwoordig: winkelcentrum Dieren), waarvan de bouw in 1968 was begonnen en in 1994 was voltooid. De beelden van een ijsbeer en twee ijsbeerjongen stonden op een grote, uit natuursteen vervaardigde, aflopende sokkel die het uiterlijk had van een berg ijsblokken. Lange tijd heeft er water langs de beeldengroep gestroomd totdat de techniek het af liet weten.
“IJsberen” werd gezichtsbepalend voor het winkelcentrum. De plek waarop ze stonden, werd een plek van ontspanning tijdens het boodschappen doen. Kinderen konden op de beren klimmen en fotografen konden naar hartelust foto’s van de beeldengroep maken.
Gaandeweg de jaren raakte het Callunaplein in verval. In oktober 2012 werd dit door D66 aanhangig gemaakt in de gemeenteraad, waarbij de fractie ook aandacht vroeg voor het afbrokkelen van platen van de sokkel waarop “IJsberen” was geplaatst. Reparatie bleek niet afdoende, in de loop der jaren brokkelden sommige platen opnieuw af, zoals te zien is op de hierboven afgebeelde foto, gepubliceerd in de editie van 13 september 2019 van rheden.nieuws.nl. De slechte staat van de sokkel zou, mede gezien de hellende vlakken waarop de beelden stonden, tot gevaarlijke situaties kunnen leiden. Vooruitlopend op de herinrichting in 2020 van het Callunaplein werd de beeldengroep in de laatste week van september 2019 door de gemeente Dieren, de eigenaar, in opslag genomen en werd een nieuwe sokkel vervaardigd uit natuurstenen blokken en platen.
In november 2020 werd de beeldengroep teruggeplaatst op het Callunaplein op een natuurstenen ijsschotsenlandschap met de grote ijsbeer op het hoogste blok en de ijsbeerjongen op stenen platen. In het vlak waaraan de beeldengroep staat, is van links naar rechts een rij vijfhoekige stapstenen gelegd. In de zomermaanden stroomt er water in het vlak en spuiten er fonteintjes.

The sculpture group “Polar Bears” was placed on Callunaplein in Dieren in 1987 on the occasion of the completion of the second phase of the Calluna shopping center (nowadays: Dieren shopping centre), construction of which started in 1968 and was completed in 1994. The statues of a polar bear and two polar bear cubs stood on a large, natural stone, sloping pedestal that resembled a mountain of ice blocks. For a long time, water flowed past the sculpture group until the technology failed.
“Polar bears” became the face of the shopping center. The place they stood on became a place of relaxation while shopping. Children could climb on the bears and photographers could take pictures of the sculpture group to their heart's content.
Over the years, Callunaplein fell into disrepair. In October 2012, this was brought before the municipal council by D66, where the faction also drew attention to the crumbling of plates from the pedestal on which "Polar bears" had been placed. Repair proved insufficient, over the years some plates crumbled again, as can be seen in the photo above, published in the September 13, 2019 edition of rheden.nieuws.nl. The poor condition of the pedestal could lead to dangerous situations, partly in view of the sloping surfaces on which the statues stood. In anticipation of the refurbishment of Callunaplein in 2020, the sculpture group was put into storage by the municipality of Dieren, the owner, in the last week of September 2019, and a new plinth was made from natural stone blocks and slabs.
In November 2020, the sculpture group was placed back on Callunaplein on a natural stone ice floe landscape with the large polar bear on the highest block and the polar bear cubs on stone slabs. In the plane on which the sculpture group stands, a row of pentagonal stepping stones has been laid from left to right. In the summer months, water flows into the surface and fountains spray.
