ENG From the Bronbeek estate brochure:
The ship Waterloo left at the end of December 1826 with infantrymen to reinforce the armed forces on Java, where a major war against the Government under the leadership of Prince Dipo Negoro was underway. It got caught in a heavy storm on the way and lost its masts. By dropping anchor off the island of Borkum, all those on board were saved. The Minister of the Navy donated the anchor to Bronbeek in 1877. Since that time it has been on the estate as a symbol for the support that Bronbeek offers the former soldier. Since 1997, every year on February 27, the many hundreds of men who died in the battle in the Java Sea on February 27-28, 1942 have been commemorated at this anchor.
