Around the year 800, the ancestors of the Constable of France, Bertrand du Guesclin, built a fortress on the island east of the beach, probably on the ruins of a Roman construction. The grandson of Salomon, Lord of Saint-Coulomb, Bertrand du Guesclin transformed this modest residence into a fortified castle in the 11th century.

In 1160 Bertrand II du Guesclin had a cistern dug in the rock to supply himself with fresh water during the sieges. The lords of Guarplic (old spelling of du Guesclin) reigned there until 1250.

After the League War, in 1598, the fortress was dismantled. However, to protect the coast from English landings, a small fort was built between 1756 and 1758. Built on the old fort wall, the current residence was owned by singer Léo Ferré. A staircase carved into the rock provides access to the current gate of the fortification. The fort’s exceptional location provides a remarkable view of the Chausey Islands.

This island is private property and cannot be visited. For safety, it is recommended not to approach from outside the walls and slopes of the fort. The island is surrounded twice a day to the rhythm of the tides. It is therefore strongly recommended to check the tide times and coefficients before venturing onto the rocks."

Vers l’an 800, les ancêtres du connétable de France, Bertrand du Guesclin, édifièrent sur l’ilot à l’est de la plage, une forteresse, probablement sur les ruines d’une construction romaine. Le petit fils de Salomon, seigneur de Saint-Coulomb, Bertrand du Guesclin transformait au XIème siècle cette modeste demeure en un château fortifié.

En 1160 Bertrand II du Guesclin y fit creuser dans le roc, une citerne pour s’approvisionner en eau douce pendant les sièges. Les seigneurs du Guarplic (ancienne graphie de du Guesclin) y régnèrent jusqu’en 1250.

Après la guerre de la Ligue, en 1598, la forteresse fut démontée. Toutefois pour protéger le littoral des débarquements anglais, un petit fort fut construit entre 1756 et 1758. Bâtie sur l’ancienne enceinte du fort, la demeure actuelle fut la propriété du chanteur Léo Ferré. Un escalier taillé dans la roche permet d’accéder à la porte actuelle de la fortification. La situation exceptionnelle du fort permet d’avoir un point de vue remarquable sur les îles Chausey.

Cette île est une propriété privée et ne se visite pas. Par sécurité il est recommandé de ne pas s’approcher par l’extérieur des murs et des pentes du fort. L’île se fait encercler deux fois par jour au rythme des marées. Il est donc fortement recommandé de vérifier les horaires et coefficients de marée avant de s’aventurer sur les rochers."
