“Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz (1851-1924) was van 1898 tot 1904 civiel en militair gouverneur van Atjeh op Sumatra, waar hij erin slaagde het inheemse verzet in de langdurige Atjehoorlog te breken door de invoering van een nieuwe gevechtstactiek. Hij bereikte zijn hoogste militaire rang in 1900 met zijn benoeming tot luitenant-generaal. Als gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands-Indië (1904-1909) wist hij het Nederlandse gezag in alle buitengewesten daadwerkelijk te vestigen. Dit bronzen borstbeeld door Theo van Reijn (1884-1954) staat sinds 1951 op Bronbeek. De beide kanonnen behoren tot de collectie Atjehse monsterkanonnen, waarvan de meeste te zien zijn in de Waterloobaan en de Djagaragabaan in het hoofdgebouw.”

Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz (1851-1924) was civil and military governor of Aceh in Sumatra from 1898 to 1904, where he managed to break the indigenous resistance in the protracted Aceh War by introducing a new combat tactic. He reached his highest military rank in 1900 with his appointment as lieutenant general. As governor-general of the Dutch East Indies (1904-1909), he was able to effectively establish Dutch authority in all the outer regions. This bronze bust by Theo van Reijn (1884-1954) has been on Bronbeek since 1951. Both guns belong to the Acehnese monster guns collection, most of which can be seen in the Waterloobaan and the Djagaragabaan in the main building.”
