Sir Walter Raleigh was born in nearby Hayes Barton in c.1552, and his parents are buried in All Saints churchyard in the village. The 14th-century church contains attractive pew ends including one bearing the Raleigh coat of arms.
The pub is about 50m south from the church on the High Street. The coulourful sign is on the front of the building, depicting one of the most famous (and sadly apocryphal) stories of the incident when Ralegh rescued the royal feet of Elizabeth I from getting wet and muddy in ‘a plashy place’ by sacrificing his plush velvet cloak to cover the puddle. This tale was first recorded in Thomas Fuller’s History of the Worthies of England, published some 80 years after the supposed event.
