In het grasperk voor Huis Kernhem staat een vroeg werk van Rien Goené. Het stamt uit de beginfase van zijn kunstenaarscarriere toen hij in de jaren vijftig begon met het maken van ijzerplastieken van bij elkaar geraapt schroot.
Rien Goené is schilder én beeldhouwer. Hij kreeg zijn opleiding aan de Utrechtse kunstacademie Artibus. Hij werkt zowel figuratief als abstract. Door heel Nederland zijn in de openbare ruimte werken van hem te vinden. De stijl van deze beelden is meestal figuratief met een eenvoudige en hoekige beeldtaal. Overbodige details zijn weggelaten. Het beeld Phoenix valt juist op door de abstracte vorm. Herkenbaar zijn de verschillende gebruikte schroot onderdelen: moeren, plaatwerk, staven enz. Alles aan elkaar gelast tot een vorm, die naar boven toe wijd uitloopt als een vogel die haar vleugels uitslaat. De titel van het werk refereert naar de symbolische betekenis van de feniks, de vogel die steeds uit haar eigen as herboren wordt. Hier is een kunstwerk herrezen.

In the lawn in front of Huis Kernhem is an early work by Rien Goené. It dates back to the early stages of his artist career when he started making iron plastics from collected scrap in the 1950s.
Rien Goené is a painter and sculptor. He received his education at the Artibus art academy in Utrecht. He works both figuratively and abstractly. His works can be found in public spaces throughout the Netherlands. The style of these images is usually figurative with a simple and angular visual language. Superfluous details have been omitted. The Phoenix image stands out because of its abstract form. Recognizable are the different scrap parts used: nuts, sheet metal, rods, etc. All welded together into a shape, which flares upwards like a bird that spreads its wings. The title of the work refers to the symbolic meaning of the phoenix, the bird that is constantly reborn from its own ashes. Here is a work of art resurrected.
