Langworthy Memorial Park is named for Hope Valley, Rhode Island, resident Joseph A. Langworthy, Jr. He was a professional baseball player in the Red Sox minor league system as a catcher and third baseman from the mid-1940s through 1950. A large stone marker at the southern tip of the park includes his advice to pitchers, the words carved within a rendering of home plate:

AS JOE WOULD SAY
"AIM FOR THE MIDDLE
AND THE CORNERS WILL TAKE
CARE OF THEMSELVES."
