Engebreen is a glacier arm of Svartisen, stretching down towards the lake Engabrevatnet. Svartisen is the second largest of Norway’s glaciers. In the 1890's, the Svartisen Glacier covered this entire lake Svartisvatnet, which is only a couple meters over sea level. The glacier is in retreat,
in 2007 the glacier was only 20 metres above sea level. Now the glacier is about 200 metres above sea level.

To get near Engebreen you have to take a ferry that sails to Engen Habour. From here it is about 5 km to walk. The first kilometers are on gravel road, but the last kilometer is of a small rocky path. And then you stand at the bottom of the Engebreen, where it previously reached. As it has thawed, you have to crawl / walk the last few hundred meters.
When you walk from the harbor there is halfway a cafe from which you can see the Engebreen

Warning!!! The area becomes very suddenly foggy, so stay on the road. Do not walk alone to Engebreen, and do not walk up on the ice itself.
If you want to see Engebreen up close, it is possible to book a trip with an experienced tour guide, who also provides the necessary equipment.
