The fjord at Porsanger is an area with rich and varied bird fauna. The area is 50,290 ha. It mainly consists of meadows, wetlands and birch forest. During the spring, thousands of red knots stop to rest and eat along the shores of the Porsangerfjord. The area is protected and is part of the worldwide organization BirdLife International.
In addition to the many birds, there are also many reindeer that graze in the area
