The sign, "Turtles, Snakes and Frogs" gives information on 6 of the more common reptiles and amphibians found in the Cache River and Heron Pond State Natural Areas. The six species represented by this sign include green tree frogs, Eastern box turtle, copper bellied water snake, bird voiced tree frogs, spiny softshell turtles, and cottonmouth snake.

I saw several huge softshell turtles basking across the Cache River. And I was fortunate to find what I think was an Eastern Mud Turtle.

From (visit link) "Located in Little Black Slough Nature Preserve is a wonderful piece of wetlands landscape unique to Southern Illinois: Heron Pond, located near Belnap, Illinois, and part of the Cache River State Natural Area. Heron Pond is home to over 100 endangered and threatened plant and animal species on the Ohio River flood plain. These wetland locations are an important resource for migrating birds and other unique plants and animals and are a prime location to view nature at it’s finest."
