The Black Potts Railway Bridge opened in December 1849, two months after the rival Windsor Railway Bridge had opened on the Slough to Windsor railway line. Opening had been delayed by damage to one of the girders just before the completion of construction and by an outbreak of cholera in Windsor.

Initially it had looked likely that the direct railway from London would have to terminate on the east bank of the Thames, but in 1848 permission was granted for a bridge and a continuation of the line into Windsor itself at what became Windsor & Eton Riverside Railway Station. At the point where the bridge crosses the River Thames, the river flows in two channels, either side of Black Potts Ait, which supports the midpoint of the bridge. Originally built with ornate cast iron ribs, the bridge was subsequently modified and now has plain, wrought iron parts. The bridge lies roughly halfway between Windsor & Eton Riverside and Datchet railway stations.

The above information is taken from various sources, including Wikipedia and thamesweb.co. The coordinates are for a safe viewing point on a footpath on the west side of the bridge. There is no vehicle or pedestrian access to the bridge itself.
