At the water inlet meeting, playing and the supply of water are combined in a playful way. The use of the abstract shapes of boats fits in with the water-rich history of the municipality of Zaanstad.

According to the local municipality website:
"There are all kinds of natural stone 'boats' with the prow to the canal, like ships in a marina. They are the stepping stones on which the children can walk. There are lock doors between the boats that allow children to influence the watercourse. On the side is the 'mooring jetty', a wooden stand where adults can sit in the sun. In front of the gate is a narrow wooden strip that forms a bridge from one side to the other.

Interactive Pavers
Due to weather conditions, it is possible that the water supply over the square is closed and the canal is supplied with water in a different way. As an additional reason to play as a replacement for the water, special light stones have been incorporated into the street surface. These stones react to movement: they turn on when you come close to a stone. You can create the illusion of running water by slowly turning the lights on and off as you approach the paving stone. In this way children can influence the course of the light just as they do with the water with the help of the sluice gates.

Playplan was selected after a competition to make a plan for the Water Inlet. The aim was to design the water supply of the Zaan in the new canal in a playful way. The water flows below the surface of the water through the canal. The first Sketch Design was a set-up of different water troughs of different heights. These water troughs had the shape of Zaanse houses."

Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated:
The flow of water (rain/tides) and the use of light/water

Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?:
It is a nice place to sit (in the middle of the town center) for kids to play and the parents to enjoy the scenery. The fact that the flow of water is part of the structure could be better explained (no sign or something similar)

When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public:
24/7
