S’entassant sur 7 radeaux surchargés, 102 survivants ont pu être sauvés. Le second mécanicien du Balkan, Pierre Anfriani, va soutenir le moral des naufragés et organiser le sauvetage jusqu'à l'arrivée des secours qui se positionneront seulement vers 10h00, le 16 août, soit neuf heures après le naufrage. Il y aura environ 400 disparus. Une partie des corps est retrouvée sur les côtes de Corse dans les jours qui suivent.
Les obsèques seront célébrées le 19 août dans l'église Saint Jean-Baptiste de Bastia en présence d'une grande partie de la population bastiaise ainsi que de la totalité des autorités civiles, militaires et religieuses.

Les survivants s'organisent comme ils peuvent, passant la nuit sur sept radeaux, avant d'être repérés par deux hydravions aux alentours de 10 h du matin. L'un leur prête secours alors que l'autre va chercher du renfort. Une vedette vient ensuite les prendre en charge.
Une tragédie survenue à trois mois seulement de l'Armistice de 1918. L'émotion est à son comble dans une Corse déjà éprouvée par les milliers de morts de la Grande guerre. Le Balkan transportait 300 soldats permissionnaires, 32 membres d'équipages, et un peu plus 150 civils, parmi lesquels des femmes et des enfants.
Pour ne pas que cet épisode tombe dans l'oubli, François Guerrini le petit-fils d'un survivant a décidé de lancer une page Facebook "Naufrage du Balkan", afin de collecter des témoignages et des documents datant de cette époque.
Une messe et une procession en mémoire des victime auront lieu à Calvi, le 26 août.
