Abandoned village of Occi

The first mention of the village dates back to 1589 but the date of its foundation is estimated to be the 14th or 15th century.
The Saracen attacks of the Middle Ages, which devastated the coast of Corsica, are the reason why the inhabitants of the place called Spano took refuge and settled there little by little. However, a few centuries later, the village was finally abandoned in favor of Lumio.

Totally deserted in the 19th century, it fell into ruins. Its very last inhabitant, Felix Giudicelli, died there in 1918.

A part of its reconstruction was largely financed by private donations.
The church of the Annunziata, entirely restored in 2002, can again host the celebration of certain services.
During religious festivals, the statue of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of the village, is carried in procession through the streets.

The association constituted for the safeguard of Occi (Oci, paese rinascitu) is committed to the fact that the village is accessible only by pedestrian paths (no road is envisaged) and is not the object of a commercial exploitation.

Three paths lead to the abandoned village of Occi:

- the first is located a few meters above the entrance to the Panoramic campsite, on the departmental road 71 that connects Lumio to Lavatoggiu but its maintenance is not regular; the path is partly paved and climbs gently.

- The second, the longest and most difficult, starts at the Notre Dame de la Stella chapel between Capu d'Occi and Capu Braccaghju.

- The third one starts from the hotel-restaurant Chez Charles at the northern entrance of Lumio, it is the best maintained and the most used.
It takes an average of 20 to 30 minutes to walk to Occi.
Whatever path you choose, this walk is accessible with children
