In a clear case of misinformation being propagated over the internet, almost every website that mentions this mural describes it as depicting Cooke’s Peak or Cooke’s Range located just north of Deming New Mexico. But for the folks who live there or anyone familiar with this mural who has visited Deming and taken a good look around knows, it actually shows the Florida Mountains just southeast of town.

The mural, painted in 1937 by Taos New Mexico artist Kenneth Miller Adams, is entitled “Mountains and Yucca.” It is one of over a thousand murals produced during the Great Depression to adorn public buildings in conjunction with the Works Progress Administration, one of President Franklin Roosevelt’s ‘alphabet soup’ programs. It’s displayed in the lobby of the Deming post office which itself was another WPA project.

The view of the mountains on the mural, though somewhat stylized, is from the northwest and is basically the view from just about anywhere in the town of Deming. The Florida Mountains are about 12 miles long. The highest peak (7295 ft.) is called Florida Peak which lies near the northern end of the range.
