"Between 1888 and 1904, the Maas was closed at Andel at the initiative of engineer Cornelis Lely.
The river was then connected to the Amer and the Hollandsch Diep via the newly dug Bergsche Maas. The Bergsche Maas was officially inaugurated by Queen Wilhelmina in 1904 .

The river plays an important role in storage and drainage during high water. The broad floodplains can absorb large amounts of water between the dikes."
