The building was originally a Jesuit convent, built in Rococo style from 1714 to 1746 by Geronimo Quezada y Garçon. After 1767 it was used for different purposes: tobacco warehouse, a theater, governmental offices. Then, in 1956, the Spanish architect Javier Borroso renovated the building for its current usage, commissioned by the dictator Rafael Trujillo.
