"Although electric lighting arrived in 1896, electric light had already been released in Vigo long before. It is known that, in 1880, the industrialist Antonio López de Neira , owner of a paper factory and another chocolate factory, bought a spotlight with which he illuminated the procession of Cristo de la Victoria . Although, in reality, electric lighting had arrived in Vigo a decade earlier, in 1870 , when the Ruhmkorf lamps were first used in the estuary, during the expedition led by Hippolyte Magen to rescue the Rande galleons. In fact, the Vigo estuary is the first place in the world where underwater electric light was used for underwater work.
By the way, electric lighting arrived in New York some time later than in the Vigo estuary , but 14 years before the Plaza de la Constitución. It was in 1882, when the first lamp in the Big Apple was lit and the first 85 subscribers were supplied.
