Sant'Antonino (Haute-Corse)

Sant'Antonino is a village located in the center of the Balagne region in the North-East of Corsica, South-West of Ile Rousse. Because of its geographical situation clinging to the top of a hill, the village is sometimes referred to as the 'eagles nest'.

Sant'Antonino is officially classified among the "most beautiful villages of France". It has a history dating back to the 9th century - the location was chosen because of its natural defenses - making it one of the oldest villages in Corsica.

Much of the village is a maze of narrow streets, steeply sloping lanes and arched passageways where old traditional houses make Sant'Antonino a delight for tourists to explore.

The narrow streets leave little room for large monuments. Here it is a small courtyard, a small chapel, a baker's oven or other interesting architectural elements that make the visit interesting and add to the traditional character of the village.

Walking around, you can't help but notice how the massive granite used for the building mixes with the hill, and the two often seem almost inseparable...

One of the most imposing monuments is on the edge of the village: the church of the Annunciation dating from the 11th century with its high bell tower on four levels. Inside you can admire several paintings from the 18th century.

But another monument is on a smaller scale, the Chapel of Lavasina, a small traditional building in Piazza Savelli Spinosi.

These highlights, together with the location and relative accessibility of Sant ' Antonino, make the village unmissable.
