Uxío Novoneyra, literary name of Eugenio Novo Neira, was born into a wealthy peasant family, which allowed him to go to Lugo to study high school in 1945, where he became friends with the poets Manuel María and Luís Pimentel. From there he moved to Madrid to study Philosophy and Letters and, in 1952, while doing military service, he came into close contact with Galician cultural circles. Between 1953 and 1962 he convalesced in O Courel from pleurisy. This stay of rest will cause the appearance of his singular poetic voice and also the close relationship of friendship and recognition of him with the writer María Mariño, who acts as editor of his poetry books. In 1962 he returned to Madrid, which allowed him to combine bohemia, political activism and contact with the artistic avant-garde of that time. During this period he works in cultural programming on radio and television. During the years of his training, he maintained a close relationship with prominent Galician singers (Ramón Piñeiro, Ramón Otero Pedrayo and Manuel Colmeiro), among whom he earned just fame as a bard and reciter, particularly of medieval Galician songbooks, and struck up friendships with the writers of his generation, particularly Carlos Oroza, the members of Brais Pinto (Xosé Luís Méndez Ferrín, X. Fernández Ferreiro, Bernardino Graña) and various painters (Tino Gandío, Reimundo Patiño…). In 1966 he returns to Courel to take care of his elderly parents and meets his wife, Elba Rei, with whom he has three children. The dancer and poet Blanca Novoneyra is one of them. The book that forms the backbone of his work, Os eidos, is a poetic collection insistently revamped and expanded in successive editions. In it, he collects the deepest impression of the mountain landscape on man, and creates a worldview that, on the one hand, reflects the imbrication of the human in the natural, and, on the other, builds the attentive and daily emotion of life in the village, without falling into ruralist topics, and insisting on the importance of the precise word constructed by usage (its characteristic use of the Courel dialect recognizes the universality of the particular and popular memory). His interest in the short poem, which seeks to impress the reader, brings him closer to haiku. His poetry, always deeply rooted in orality, and attentive to form, is completed with the political word of the elegies, influenced by social and political militancy and the sound cadence of beat literature (notably “Vietnam Canto” and “Pranto polo Che”); eroticism; and, finally, calligraphic poetry, in which he applies the painter Jackson Pollock's conception of art. In fact, painting is always very present in his references and in the collaborations of the poet with plastic artists and, later, due to the influence of the oriental consideration of calligraphy. In the 1990s he contributed some titles set in the Courel to the emerging Galician children's and youth literature and prepared a translation of xiikas by Ayako Sugitani, who, in turn, translated some of Novoneyra's texts into Japanese. in which he applies the conception of art of the painter Jackson Pollock. In fact, painting is always very present in his references and in the collaborations of the poet with plastic artists and, later, due to the influence of the oriental consideration of calligraphy. In the 1990s he contributed some titles set in the Courel to the emerging Galician children's and youth literature and prepared a translation of xiikas by Ayako Sugitani, who, in turn, translated some of Novoneyra's texts into Japanese. in which he applies the conception of art of the painter Jackson Pollock. The importance that his poetry has in contemporary Galician literature is emphasized by a fellow generation, Méndez Ferrín, when he titled his doctoral thesis, published in a book, as De Pondal a Novoneyra (1984). He was chosen as the author of the Día das Letras Galegas, which allowed ordering his work, complex due to the incessant rewriting of texts, publishing unpublished and generating an important volume of studies and biographies.
