The church of St Mary was built in early medieval times within the north-eastern corner of the earthworks of a Roman fort called Canovium.

The church which is located in the small hamlet of Caerhun in the Conwy valley is reached via a short lane from the B5106.

The sundial is located in the churchyard close to the main entrance of the church.

The stone pedestal that the sundial sits on appears to be quite worn and ancient.

The sundial plate and the gnomon are in good condition with the plate showing the hours in Roman numerals and the cardinal points. The plate is decorated with stylised mythical beasts and with the words "Sunny Hours".
Sundial Type: Horizontal - Flat base, Ground or Pedestal mounted dial plate
