The book calls Phuket a "playground for the rich" claiming it has lost its innocence and personality. You may find it true if you stay in Patong - the famous resort city. It has a beautiful beach, a lot of luxurious hotels, vivid nightlife, and unfortunately a tone of tourist crowding on streets and seashore. But Phuket has more to offer and an original charm still can be found here. Watch a sunset at less crowded but still stunning Kata beach (it is shown by coordinates). Visit Big Buddha temple on Nakkerd Hill with a 45 m high statue that overlooks the whole island. Have an amazing Thai massage, go snorkeling, or take windsurfing lessons.
