Voor we met de wandeling starten eerst een klein stukje geschiedenis:
De oorsprong van het landgoed is in 1824. De heer Jacob Bredius kocht enkele percelen
grond, net buiten de stadswallen van Woerden. Zoon Cornelis bouwde de boerderij, Hofstede
Batestein, in 1852 en villa Rijnoord in 1863. Na de dood van Cornelis in 1873 kwam het landgoed
in handen van zijn zonen Jacobus en Arnoldus. Zij beheerden het gezamenlijk, maar woonden
niet op het landgoed. Bij de hofstede hoort ook een schuur. Die is in de loop der tijd gebruikt als
zomerhuis, als varkensschuur en als wagenschuur. In de periode 1906-1920 heeft een zoon van
Arnoldus, Cornelis J.A. Bredius, het landgoed verder uitgebreid. Hij kocht omliggende percelen
aan, waarna de fruitteelt zijn hoogtepunt bereikte. Uiteindelijk is het landgoed in de periode
1964-1970 door de gemeente Woerden voor een deel onteigend en voor het andere deel
aangekocht. Hierna een aantal wetenswaardigheden over het landgoed.
