Marshall Hale started Hale’s Department Store in 1855 as M. Hale & Co. Originally, he sold hardware and boots to settlers and lumberjacks. Later, the store added groceries and then sold mainly clothing and shoes until closing in 2009.
The three-story part of the store will be renovated as apartments in the upper stories and retail space on the lower floor.
