The Fredrik Church was built in the baroque style in 1720 and the church was consecrated in 1744. The spiers at the top of the church towers were not completed until 1758. The church was designed by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and replaced a temporary wooden church.

In 1790, parts of the church burned and, among other things, the roof fell down. The church was restored in 1805 and 1806. A more recent restoration took place in 1997-1998. An interior restoration has taken place between 2014-2018.

The church is one of the most important monuments of the classical Roman baroque in Sweden. Together with the city of Karlskrona, it is inscribed on the World Heritage List.

The church, which belongs to the Church of Sweden (Svenska Kyrkan), is open weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm.

Since 2000, the Church of Sweden has been the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sweden. From 1860 to the end of 1999, the Church of Sweden was a state church. Before 1860, the church in Sweden was known by other names. The Church of Sweden has 5.7 million members.
