A stockless anchor from the United States Coast Guard Cutter Comanche is on display at a monument within Florence Veterans Park in Florence, South Carolina. It rests on a pair of granite blocks separated just enough to accommodate the midsection of the flukes. The flukes point straight up, perpendicular to the ground. Its shank tilts back at an angle of about 65 degrees, mirroring the front face slant of the granite blocks. A section of chain links wraps three times down the shank from the head, its end finally resting on the front side of the left fluke.

A polished black granite plaque on a granite support block to the left front side of the anchor gives a brief history of the vessel:

  • The 168-foot “A” class cutter, Comanche, was commissioned 1 Dec 1934. She was stationed in New York and performed rescue and ice-breaking operations.
  • On 1 July 1941, the Comanche was assigned the USN and her homeport became Boston. In World War II, the Comanche provided critical support to the war effort serving in the North Atlantic, performing ice-breaking activities, anti-submarine operations, and troop supply ship escort.
  • On 3 Feb 1943, the Comanche crew saved the lives of 97 Soldiers following the torpedoing of the US Army Troopship USAT Dorchester.
  • At the end of WWII, The Comanche performed air-sea rescue until she was decommissioned on 29 Jul 1947.

A polished black granite plaque on a granite support block to the right front side of the anchor reads:

Dedicated to the men and women of the
United States Coast Guard
