This stamp, issued in 2009, was part of a series of international-rate airmail stamps called ‘Scenic American Landscapes.’ Many of these stamps featured scenes from national parks and other state or federally administered areas.

Zion National Park, located in southwest Utah, is an area of steep canyons and other large rock formations comprised primarily of sandstone. One of these, named ‘The Great White Throne,’ was featured on an earlier U.S. postage stamp issued in 1935. For this stamp, the U.S. Postal Service chose a photo of a small, relatively obscure formation in the eastern part of the park, just off the road near the bizarrely eroded formation known as ‘Checkerboard Mesa.’
