Over Nelson Mandela
Vanaf 1944 was Mandela betrokken bij de strijd van het Afrikaans Nationaal Congres (ANC) tegen het apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika. Als leider van de militaire tak van het ANC werd hij in 1963 opgepakt en kreeg hij een levenslange gevangenisstraf opgelegd. In 1990 kwam hij vrij en werd het ANC gelegaliseerd. Samen met president F.W. de Klerk kreeg Mandela in 1993 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede voor "hun inspanningen voor het vreedzaam einde van het apartheidsregime en het leggen van de funderingen voor een nieuw democratisch Zuid-Afrika".
Bij de eerste vrije, niet-raciale verkiezingen in 1994 werd de op dat moment 75-jarige Mandela gekozen tot president van de Republiek Zuid-Afrika. In 1999 trad hij af. In Zuid-Afrika wordt hij beschouwd als de "vader des vaderlands".[1] Zijn bijnaam was Madiba, de naam in zijn clan voor Thembu-koningen.

over de plaats
De brug ligt tussen station en het Defensie-eiland. Waardoor fietsers achter het kasteel door naar het centrum kunnen fietsen. Dit ontlast het verkeer op de Stationsweg. de brug is alleen voor fietsers en voetgangers te gebruiken. en het leuke is dat men even later op het fietspad deel in beide richtingen het woord "glimlach" heeft gezet waardoor je eigenlijk dit ook vanzelf gaat doen
In een commissie vergadering heeft men besloten de nieuw te bouwen fietsbrug richting het Defensie-eiland te vernoemen naar de overleden Nelson Mandela.

About Nelson Mandela
From 1944, Mandela was involved in the African National Congress's (ANC) struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa. As leader of the military wing of the ANC, he was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released in 1990 and the ANC was legalised. Together with President F.W. de Klerk, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for "their efforts for the peaceful end of the apartheid regime and the laying of the foundations for a new democratic South Africa".
In the first free, non-racial election in 1994, the then 75-year-old Mandela was elected President of the Republic of South Africa. He resigned in 1999. In South Africa he is considered the "father of the fatherland."[1] His nickname was Madiba, the name in his clan for Thembu kings.

about the place
The bridge lies between the railway station and the Defence Island. This allows cyclists to cycle behind the castle to the centre. The bridge can only be used by cyclists and pedestrians. And the nice thing is that a little later, the word "smile" was put on the cycle path in both directions, which actually makes you do this automatically.
In a committee meeting, it was decided to name the newly built cycle bridge in the direction of the Defence Island after the deceased Nelson Mandela.
