[EN] "The old town hall is one of the most important buildings in Magdeburg with the seat of the mayor and meeting place of the council.

Historical background
The history of the Old Town Hall on the Old Market Square dates back to the 12th/13th century. The oldest parts of the town hall are located in the area of today's Ratskeller. The long hall was the storage and sales hall of the furrier guild.

After its destruction during the Thirty Years' War, the town hall was rebuilt as a two-story sandstone building in the style of the Italian-Dutch Renaissance according to the designs of the engineer captain Heinrich Schmutze.

Numerous reconstructions and extensions took place in the 19th century.

The second destruction followed in January 1945, when the town hall - like large parts of the city during an air raid - was reduced to rubble. The reconstruction true to the original began in 1965.
Pictorial traditions
Interesting details are the bronze door, created by the sculptor Heinrich Apel, on which events and personalities of the town history can be seen.

Carillon
A special attraction is the carillon with four octaves and stick piano, which can be heard not only at concerts, but also on market days."
