16th century Angelus Bell on display in St Michael's church, Beer.

"This cast iron bell was taken down from the Present Church tower in 1963, when the Steeple was removed for Safety reasons. It is an “Angelus bell” (See description below). It is not known if it is from the original church which was built on this site in around 1600, but this bell is believed to date from the 16th century.

The present peel of five bells came from All Saints Church in Braywood, Berkshire, when that church was demolished. They are located in the Southern bell-tower and are normally rung weekly by our locally-based group of campanologists. Visiting ringers are made welcome throughout the year....

The Angelus (Latin for ‘angel’) is a Catholic/Anglican devotion or prayer commemorating the Incarnation - the belief that God took human form by becoming Jesus. As with many Prayers, its name Is derived from the first few words of the Prayer: “Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ” (‘the Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary").

The prayer was traditionally recited in Roman Catholic Churches, convents, and monasteries three times daily at 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00. Many Catholic churches still use this Prayer, and some worshippers use it at home.

The Angelus is usually accompanied by the ringing of the Angelus bell as a call to prayer and to spread goodwill to everyone. The angel referred to in the Prayer is Gabriel, a messenger of God who revealed to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive a child to be born the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38)"
